The Power of Perspective

The Power of Perspective: Navigating Life's Challenges with a New Lens

Life is full of twists and turns, whether you're steering a startup through turbulent waters or grappling with personal challenges that feel insurmountable. The key to navigating these tumultuous moments often lies in one crucial element: perspective.

The Breakfast Epiphany: Startup Growth and Financial Decisions

Imagine this: you're at breakfast, deep in conversation about the unpredictable journey of startup growth. Every sip of coffee seems to amplify the weight of significant financial decisions looming over you. The uncertainty is palpable, the risk is enormous, and you find yourself in what can only be described as a "tornado" of doubt and stress. It's moments like these that require more than just logical analysis; they demand a leap of faith and a reservoir of determination.

Shifting the Lens: Overcoming Anxiety and Fear

In these high-stakes situations, it's easy to get paralyzed by fear. But what if the solution lies not in changing the circumstances, but in shifting your perspective? By viewing challenges as opportunities for growth rather than insurmountable obstacles, you can transform anxiety into action and fear into focus.

Life Lessons from the Open Road: Motorcycle Riding and Business

For me, there's a fascinating parallel between motorcycle riding and business. Both require a keen sense of focus and a solid perspective to navigate effectively. On a motorcycle, the road ahead can be unpredictable, much like the journey of a business. But by keeping your eyes on where you want to go, rather than the obstacles in your path, you can steer yourself towards success.

Embrace the Journey: Appreciate, Achieve, and Stay Curious

At the heart of this narrative is a simple yet transformative message: appreciate your journey, recognize your achievements, and remain curious for future growth. Life's challenges are inevitable, but by shifting your perspective, you can turn these challenges into stepping stones towards greater success and fulfillment.

So the next time you find yourself caught in a storm of doubt and stress, remember that the power to change your situation often lies within. Shift your perspective, take that leap of faith, and embrace the journey ahead. After all, it's not just about where you're going, but how you choose to get there.

[00:00:38] If it's positive, please check it out on Apple, on your podcast player, or on Spotify, or audible. But let me know how I'm doing and let others know so we can continue to spread the word on the show. Today, I want to talk about perspective.

[00:00:57] I've probably put this in at different times, different areas. I can't even recall if I've brought up perspective in a past podcast. But I'm going to cover this quickly because I just felt like I need to drop a quick strategy on perspective.

[00:01:18] Maybe you're in that space where you need a perspective shift. And so I'm just going to share a story. I had a breakfast with a friend of mine this morning. And now by the time this gets released, it won't be this morning but I'm recording it.

[00:01:40] And this morning we had a great conversation set down for two and a half hours as I like to do. And I like to get deep. I find other business men that I get to have some one on one time. And we just try to get vulnerable.

[00:02:01] You try to talk about, you know, really what we're challenged with, what we're facing. This can be an all facets of life but this morning it was really talking about the growth of a startup.

[00:02:14] And I can feel this. I can relate because not only have I started a company but at every moment of growth in a business. And if you don't own a business, this is good insight for you.

[00:02:29] At every moment of growth there's an inflection point of where you feel like a startup again. Because you're hitting the accelerator, you're reinvesting back into the company. And if you're a startup, you're establishing things, you know, brand new.

[00:02:45] And so there's a moment of where there's this leap of faith. And that moment can last a year or two years. You got to wait until you see things come to fruition.

[00:02:56] But a lot of times you're jumping or walking into the unknown in terms of how things are going to turn out. And now this can be the best strategy in the world.

[00:03:07] It can be proven time and time again at different companies, but at your company with your staff at this particular point. Everything is a risk. And so when you're starting a company as my friend is there are moments of where you look back on what you've invested.

[00:03:28] And you're bound to look at that and go, you know, we've made mistakes along the way. But when you have a substantial investment into an adventure, there's going to be a lot of questioning. And success comes on the other side of that kind of that steely determination.

[00:03:50] You, although you must shift, you know, course from time to time when you have a strategy and you are forecasting how long it's going to take to play out. That's the big picture that's the macro, but in the micro it's the day-to-day.

[00:04:06] It's the feeling of not having enough financial runway. It's the feeling of investing capital into something that you know, this department. In this case, you know, growing a sales team, you know that this is necessary, but you know, maybe one or two hires that didn't go your way.

[00:04:31] Makes you question, you know, what's the next step look like? And when you're in this space, I can, I can best describe it as some moments.

[00:04:44] It's kind of this enthusiastic paralysis of where you're, you're super excited and hopeful, but you feel almost paralyzed from the fear of running out of capital, from putting money to work that maybe now in hindsight you're looking at and going, gosh, did I do the right thing?

[00:05:07] And so when you're in that that tornado, I call the feeling, when I get into that cycle of when I'm feeling anxiety. It's when I'm spun.

[00:05:19] And so, you know, I kind of use that term for myself because I'm like, man, I'm spinnin' right now of where my mind is starting to create narratives. Doubt is creeping in and again, you don't have to only start a company or grow a company to experience this.

[00:05:35] This is going to be an investment that you made into a house. You know, a big purchase that you made that you're overwhelmed with, you're not sure.

[00:05:43] When you have an outlay of capital and a strategy in a plan, and there isn't a clear defined moment of where you can celebrate that your decision was in fact sound. That's a scary space to be, and we were talking.

[00:06:08] What is the one way to push through this space? What is the one way that I know and there's a lot of strategies we talked about energy, and we talked about the congruency of really making sure we're aligned with our efforts.

[00:06:29] But even more so, when you get into this space of in the gap of where you're fearful, of where you're anxiously awaiting almost the demise. Like somebody's going to knock at the door and tell you that's it, and you're out of cash.

[00:06:48] When you're in that space, oh man, I mean, it takes up your waking hours. It can, in fact, a peaceful walk on the beach. It can linger even if you meditate or journal.

[00:07:08] If there's a scale inside of your being, your existence in terms of what's important and what's not and you want to be balanced in life. Well, running out of money, having that stress really tips the scale.

[00:07:26] Because it's all you can think about. People who have claimed bankruptcy or have gotten themselves in big financial trouble, either through no fault of their own medical bills or an accident, or even on their own fault where they've overspent. You know what I'm talking about.

[00:07:45] It's the same feeling of where you are fearful that you're out of money. So perspective is a big one. And how do we get it? Because you just can't think yourself out of this problem, right? Like you can't just think about perspective.

[00:08:05] You can't think of others who are worse off. But you do have to shift yourself out of the dread tailspin of where you're dreading that end result because energetically, you're going to continue down that path.

[00:08:20] It's very much akin to, I read motorcycles and it's very much akin to when when you want your bike to go somewhere you look in that direction. So you certainly coming around hairpin turns, do not want to look in the ditch or off a cliff because guess what?

[00:08:40] Your bike's going to follow your eyes and that's the truth. And so where you want to look is into the corner, you want to look at your exit strategy. And life isn't as much like that in business.

[00:08:56] You cannot be energetically misaligned for very long because you will run into the ditch or off of the side of a cliff, because you are not focused on the right things. You are focused on the dread, you're focused on what might happen.

[00:09:17] However large or small that percentage is. So you have to shift that. Now you can do that like I said through meditation, you can do that through taking walks and feeling relaxed and finding those areas of where you really, really center yourself.

[00:09:36] Sometimes that's just not enough. And so I was sharing a story of something I haven't publicly announced, we're actually excited to get behind this and talk more about it.

[00:09:47] I'm going to talk about it just for a quick second because I think it's important, you know, the fact that my wife and I have launched a scholarship focused on some of the traumatic things that have happened in our lives.

[00:10:00] This scholarship is actually aimed at providing scholarships for kids who have lost a parent to violence or drugs and alcohol. And so when we launched this, we weren't sure how many applicants we would have this year because this is the first year's launching.

[00:10:25] I wasn't also sure how many kids have gone through this. Within the first month we've had over 200 applications. My wife and I made it through five before we were emotionally spent.

[00:10:45] And I'm telling you the stories that were shared of kids that are coming up and want to better their life. But have been affected by very traumatic events and experiences that really even through my own volatility in business just put me back into a space of

[00:11:14] immediate growth and perspective because I remember what it was like as a child getting traumatic news, you know, having lost my father and getting that in that that that getting that call.

[00:11:31] Hearing the call and then being told after the call was over what had happened and how far have come from that time I was eight.

[00:11:41] And this scholarship, I thought I was helping other kids in this space my wife and I our mission really was to help others find ways to cope and grow through a traumatic event. And so here we are reading these and guess what my perspective is shifting.

[00:12:08] This wasn't even the goal at the time when I was reading these, but my perspective shifting and I can feel myself becoming very grateful for where I'm at my life and grateful for the trauma that although I wouldn't pick or give to somebody else.

[00:12:25] It happened and it helped shape me and it's put me in a place now where I'm coming full circle and so that reminded me the power of perspective now that was just one instance this is one thing that snap me back into the space of being grateful finding gratitude and it's not just a word it's not just a be grateful.

[00:12:50] It's think deeper on what are you grateful for for me in that moment I was grateful not only to help others but the fact that their stories were helping me.

[00:12:59] In that moment I felt immense gratitude for being able to somehow share in their struggle and to really really understand what their experiencing.

[00:13:14] And so that space of gratitude and perspective that intersection really really shifted things for me and so as I shared that story this morning, I felt really.

[00:13:30] I felt compelled, you know, to help my friend look at his own life and find that that shift in perspective doesn't mean that the money is going to automatically flow or that the problems on building out a team are going to be solved.

[00:13:51] But some things we can't think ourselves out of.

[00:13:54] Sometimes we have the plan sometimes it's already been set sometimes we already know what needs to be done and we're working on it but in the moments in between while we're waiting for, you know, the yeast to rise right while we're waiting for things to take shape and manifest.

[00:14:12] We are. Reminded that we need to stay focused and stay grounded on what matters and that isn't always just oh yeah you know by default my health or my family those are very important by the way, but what about the growth in your own life what about.

[00:14:30] The trauma that you've overcome what about how far you've made it to this point how far you've. What you've experienced along that path and that's what.

[00:14:42] A perspective shift will do and so for me, it was this scholarship that snapped me back into a space of feeling grateful and knowing that you know what my journey is okay and even as I'm. I'm just interested in.

[00:14:57] I'm just interested in investing and growing and pursuing the next level success and there's fear in that. I've had perspective that how far I've come and how proud I am of what I've become as a person as a man and just as a human.

[00:15:12] And so if you're listening to this. Find the thing that might give you perspective if you're stressed about something. Take a step away from that.

[00:15:24] Don't try to think your way out of it know that you if you're in this position, you're smart enough to where you already have the answers and I know that you know there's a different podcast that's created for a different moment in terms of action items one through five on how to grow this thing.

[00:15:42] That isn't this podcast, this is take a step back at the perspective of why you're even showing up.

[00:15:48] This this podcast is called business finance and soul, you know the business the personal finance and the reason we do it all the reason we show up and even play the game.

[00:16:01] But we don't have to to a certain extent and we've got to play the game of life we don't have to get into business we don't have to engage in personal finance beyond you know.

[00:16:11] Pain basic bills, but what's the reason? What's the purpose behind it all? I was reminded of mine and I hope you can take a moment and remind yourself of yours and give yourself some credit. You've come a long way.

[00:16:28] You've done a lot of good things and you're on the path. You know the answers and you'll be taken care of until next time. I'm looking forward to talking to you again.
